Oh what a difference the right tool makes in your workflow.

Little irritations that you've learned to put up with disappear in an instant. Then you wonder how come you didn't buy that tool earlier in the first place.

Case in point.

A solder spool stand.

Who needs that? Right? You can just place your 1lb solder spool on your workbench and just jerk the solder as you work along. Or sometimes, I would cut 2 feet of solder off the spool so I can just hold the solder wire. Problem is, once it gets short, I have to repeat the process and cut another 2 ft again.

So I "splurge" on a solder spool stand. I say "splurge" not because it's expensive, but it's just a nice-to-have item. I don't really need it. I can make do without it.

But after just a few days of using the solder spool stand, I can see what a big convenience this tool is. No more fighting with the solder wire, I can pull solder wire whenever I need it, without any jerking motion. It's just a smooth dispensing of the solder anytime I give it a slight tug/pull.

Another tool that I wished I bought years earlier is a desoldering gun. (I don't mean those plastic solder vacuum suckers. Those suck... in a bad way.) I mean the Hakko desoldering gun. It can pretty much desolder anything. Even desoldering fine components from double-sided, plated through holes.... EASILY!... without damage to the boards! This has been a lifesaver for me. It's like soldering in reverse. Really, it's that easy.

Other "stuff" that I've really found very useful in my work... component bender, IC extractor, IC pin straightener, Tweezers, Socket wrenches, nice dykes/cutters, thermal wire stripper.

The Thermal Wire Stripper is one of my best investments. I can strip the insulation off a wire, no matter how fine or small the wire is, without nicking the copper.

It heats the plastic insulation on the wire, then you can easily pull it out cleanly. No damage to the copper strands.

So invest in the right tools for the job. They're worth it.
